Calgary is Colder Than The Arctic, States of Matter and T-Shirt Factories

Art
This week we finished our Winter Trees paintings!

Inquiry

Through the lens of an environmental scientist, students have been learning about the Arctic.

Calgary is Colder than Iqaluit!

This week we started talking about the Arctic and we also used Google Earth to explore the vast and diverse Arctic. We explored Iqaluit, Cape Dorset, Tuktoyaktuk, and Arviat. You can explore Google Earth at the link below. What do you notice that is the same with the Prairies? What do you notice that is different? What questions do you have?

States of Matter

We did several experiments, exploring the scientific method and specifically making a Hypothesis. We threw boiling water into very frigid dry air and watched it turn into vapor and then solidify.

We also mixed salt into water to see what would happen in the immediate aftermath, but also to find out what happens over time to that mixture.

We also explored the different states of matter, using water as our guide, but also explored different materials. We learnt that temperature affects states of matter.

Math

T-Shirt Factory - We continued our work with place value. We have been practicing moving groups of tens from the tens place back into ones for a variety of different numbers. We are specifically work on our understanding of place value and regrouping so that we can move into double-digit addition with regrouping. Below is some of our work.

Literacy

Next week we start reading Arctic stories and continue on with our snowy day writing, guided reading, and word work.

Home Journals
We sent home our Home Journals again this Friday. Please read your child's Home Journal, write a quick response, and return on Monday. Thanks.
