Literacy, Math, Inquiry, Valentine's Day and reminders :)

Hi Parents. 

On Wednesday, February 12, we have left some time in our day for students to exchange Valentine's cards. This activity is optional. Please ensure that if your child participates, they have a card for every student in the class. Also, kindly refrain from bringing in candy, chocolates, or food/treats of any kind due to food allergies/intolerances. 

Please also dress in RED/PINK/Royal Oak Blue that day.

This week we continued with our practice of Double-Digit Addition with Re-grouping. We worked on our stacking procedure, we tackled some word problems that require double-digit addition, and we finished the week with a post assessment to map our progress and set our next goals. While, our students are rocking the addition stacking procedure, practice is always helpful. Here are some word problems and practice sheets. 

Inquiry

This week in inquiry we have further delved into our exploration of the Arctic and hot and cold temperatures. 

We continue to measure and graph temperature across Canada from Calgary to Iqaluit and Halifax.

As well we have begun to more closely investigate Heat and Energy in our world. 

The Grade 2 team has started a flex challenge series around temperature. Each class will participate in an hour long scientific, experimental, and design challenge with each Grade 2 teacher. This week in Mr. Sandberg's class, students built insulators to stop ice from melting in a time constrained design challenge. 

 

 

Soapstone Carving

Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who came in to help out with the Soapstone Carving. Our students had a great time learning to carve and create an inukshuk. 

Literacy

We have been reading and analyzing stories inspired by Arctic Legends. We have been specifically looking for Characters, Setting, Magical Elements, and Lessons Learned. We read Michael Kusugak's Hide and Sneak and watched the video The Owl and the Raven.

We have also started to plan, using a storyboard, our own stories inspired by Arctic Legends. 

As well, In Mrs. Craig's FLEX literacy group we have been focusing on words containing short "e" sounds such as:

Home Journals

This Friday students wrote to their parents or guardians about their week. Be sure to ask about their Home Journal, read it, and respond. Also, please return their Home Journals on Monday. 

Art

We have been weaving the Northern Lights and we are starting to finish up. Students will need a skinny and short stick, around 15cm long to attach their weaving to when they are finished. Thanks
