Bow Habitat Station!

Happy Weekend. Here is a video of my kid's first steps.
Bow Habitat Station
Fish, Fish everywhere...
We fed 18, 885 rainbow trout!

We learned about how humans use water.

We learned about contaminates in the water and how we clean the water.

We got to examine some insects with microscopes.

Inquiry

We continued to explore Iqaluit virtually. We found sled dogs, strange architecture, and many snowmobiles. We started to wonder why all the houses in Iqaluit we built on stilts?

The Water Cycle
We learned about the where water comes from and how it is recycled through the water cycle. Did you know that the water we drink is the same water that the dinosaurs drank???

We learned more about solids, liquids, and gasses and how they are made of molecules that are always moving and never stop. See what Bill Nye has to say:

Literacy
Guided Reading

We continued guided reading this week, specifically working on improving our fluency by re-reading familiar text. Students read in supportive groups and practice familiar passages in order to improve their expression and smoothness.

A Promise Is A Promise

We have started to explore Arctic Legends. We began this study with the Robert Munsch and Michael Kusugak adaptation of an Inuit legend, A Promise Is A Promise.

We read this multiple times and searched for:

1. A magical element
2. A lesson
3. Descriptive Arctic words
4. Relevance to Inuit culture

Have a listen and see if you can find these things for yourself.

Iris Posting

Our students also chose a book that they know well and did a reading on video this week. They then posted their videos on IRIS and chose a fluency goal that they are working on. Listen to your child read here:

Math

This week we continued working on our T-shirt factories. We have moved on from explicit place value exploration into double and triple digit addition using t-charts. Students were given small, medium, and large t-shirt inventory cards and asked to find their total inventories for each size of shirt in their factory.

Our next steps will be to explicitly learn about regrouping in order to buy and sell t-shirts for our factories.

Home Journals

This Friday students wrote their parents and guardians about their week. Be sure to ask about their Home Journal, read it, and respond. Also, please return their Home Journals on Monday.

Literacy Day

Family Literacy Day

“Family literacy activities strengthen the relationship between family members which, in turn, encourages lifelong learning.”

Royal Oak School will be recognizing Family Literacy Day on Monday January 27th. Students are invited to wear pajamas, bring a stuffy and a favourite book to share with a friend. Regular curricular activities will continue on this day so please make sure your child wears pajamas that allow them to participate in recess, gym, etc (no footed pajamas or nightgowns)

Further information and ideas for home can be found at www.familyliteracyday.ca
